VIVA Eye Drops
VIVA from
Corneal Science Corporation, is an important therapy for dry-eye patients.
VIVA has been shown to
restore osmolarity to proper levels and increase the continuous integrity
of the tear film (evidenced by increased BUT measurement).
An antioxidant in VIVA has
been shown to aid epithelial healing and help prevent oxidative stress.
This is the only multi-dose,
over-the-counter drop that is truly preservative-free.
VIVA come in 10mL and
15mL sizes with a 4-year shelf life.

VIVA MEDICINAL
AND THERAPEUTIC VALUE
Research
in four areas critical to dry-eye management indicates that the VIVA
formula is
ideally balanced to address these issues.
PRESERVATIVE-FREE
VIVA
are the only true preservative free drop in a
multi dose
bottle. Some artificial tears
contain a “disappearing” preservative, often borate or hydrogen
peroxide. But many patients
lack sufficient tears to dissolve the preservative.
These preservatives can be toxic to an already compromised cornea.
These patients need a truly preservative-free drop such as VIVA.
Preservatives
in contact lens solutions or pharmaceuticals can be a cause of dry eye.
The preservatives in certain medications (i.e. BAK) are known to
cause corneal epithelial damage. Frequent
use of eye drops with preservatives can eventually cause a toxic reaction.
OSMOLARITY
MAINTAINED PRECISELY AT THE
NORMAL
TEAR
LEVEL
Studies
have shown that dry eye can produce the byproducts of oxidative stress and
that the osmolarity of tears increases in a dry eye.
The osmolarity of VIVA is
maintained precisely at normal tear levels.
VIVA restore normal
osmolarity.
VITAMIN
A
One
component of VIVA, a vitamin A derivative, has been shown to help heal the
epithelium. A healthy
epithelium, as well as improved tear integrity, contributes to increased
goblet cell production. A secondary benefit is that vitamin A complexes
with lipocalin, which is known to help maintain normal tear film.
This complexing and the epithelial healing that takes place in the
presence of VIVA may be
responsible for the measured doubling of tear BUT seen in patients who use
VIVA. In one study, BUT went
from a mean of 3.7 seconds to a mean of 8.6 seconds.
50% of the patients increased to more than 10 seconds.
ANTIOXIDANTS
VIVA contains
an iron chelator that scavenges for free iron in the tears, as well as
seven antioxidants, that are crucial for avoiding free radical damage
secondary to the inflammatory process.
These antioxidants aid in epithelial healing required for a
compromised cornea. Free
radicals are released into the tears from any surgery performed on the
cornea, contact lens use, in the presence of free iron (aqueous deficient
– low Lactoferrin levels) and during any type of inflammatory process
involving the cornea and the conjunctival tissue.
Studies show that VIVA also relieve the signs and symptoms of GPC
patients and blepharitis patients.
VIVA WITH
CONTACT LENSES
VIVA are
safe to use with contact lenses when an eye doctor believes a dry eye is
present or has been induced. Studies
show that they reduce the complications due to the wearing of contact
lenses and provide patients with greater comfort and an increased ability
to wear their lenses for longer periods of time.
VIVA COSTS
LESS TO THE CONSUMER THAN OTHER PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE DROPS
Cost
is another important factor for patients, and the cost of VIVA compares
very favorably to preservative-free, unit-dose drops.
A recent report estimated the average cost per ampule of
preservative-free, unit-dose artificial tears is 35 cents.
VIVA cost is 7.5 cents
per use.
DOES
VIVA CONTAIN CARBOXYMETHYLCELLULOSE?
NO,
THEY DO NOT.
Carboxymethylcellulose seals and holds the moisture of the eye
drops. It also acts to give
the drops its viscosity. All
cellulose solutions may provide a corneal barrier which prevents the
nutrients from the eye drops being absorbed.
LASIK
APPLICATIONS
The
ideal tears for post-LASIK patients should be preservative-free.
Artificial tears should also have the ability to provide an
environment that will heal the epithelium and restore the tear
integrity to maintain the ocular health of a compromised cornea
preoperative as well as postoperatively.
VIVA
fulfills
all these requirements.
